Must-See Romanesque Churches in the Vall d’Aran
1. Santa Eulàlia of Unha
Romanesque church featuring a decorated apse and remnants of medieval frescoes, preserving the heritage of the Vall d’Aran’s Romanesque art. The panoramic views from Unha are stunning, perfect for a photo stop.
2. Saint Andrew of Salardú
One of the jewels of Aranese Romanesque art. The Christ of Salardú (13th century) holds exceptional artistic value. The building blends styles: a Romanesque portal with five archivolts and a Gothic bell tower added in the 15th century. Inside, you can also find 16th-century frescoes.
3. Saint Mary of Arties
One of the most striking churches on the Vall d’Aran’s Romanesque route. Its Romanesque apse and Gothic bell tower make it unmistakable. The original mural paintings are preserved at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC).
4. Saint Michael of Vielha
Former chapel of Vielha’s castle, with a single nave, barrel vault, and side chapels. It houses the famous Christ of Mijaran, one of the most iconic pieces of Aranese Romanesque art.
5. Saint Peter of Escunhau
A fine example of Aranese Gothic, uncommon in the Vall d’Aran. A small, charming church with a decorated apse and simple details that convey a sense of serenity.
6. Our Lady of the Purification (Bossòst)
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest in 2015. It retains its original 12th-century Romanesque style intact, making it one of the best-preserved churches in the Vall d’Aran.
